Started in 2018, this massive-scale project will develop a ski resort and a series of hotels to boost the local economy. Expected to open in 2022 in Shanghai, the biggest Ski Resort of the world will be launched conjointly with the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. This is a great opportunity for the city to benefit from inbound travel and create a major lifestyle and sports center with a wide range of activities. The property developer behind the project called “Wintastar” is KOP, a company listed at SGX Catalist has made a joint venture with Shanghai Lujiazui Development Company and Shanghai Harbour City Development Company. This will mark the brand new entry of Montigo Resorts into the Chinese market. Montigo describes: “The well-appointed Montigo Resorts, Shanghai, with over 1000 rooms, boasts ski-in/ ski-out access, selected suites with direct access to the ski slopes, thematic restaurants, a spa and spaces ideal for meetings and team-building activities” The 1,000 rooms will be spread over 4 hotels next to the integrated ski and snow park resort. It is expected that one of the hotels would be an “Ice Hotel”, details have yet to be confirmed about the enigmatic title.
The project is developed by the firm behind Ski Dubai, which boasts a 22,500 square meters of indoor ski area, relatively small in comparison to Shanghai’s version of the resort. The Dubai-based company Majid Al Futtaim will manage the operation of Wintastar, the holding company operates shopping malls, retail, and leisure establishments in 13 countries. This will be KOP’s biggest and most ambitious project to date, Ong Chih Ching, chairman and executive director of KOP commented: “The large-scale mixed-development will offer opportunities for KOPL to build new income streams, many of which are recurring in nature, for our sustainable growth going forward. The timing for Wintastar Shanghai could not be better, with Chinese consumers yearning for travel, leisure, novel experiences, and winter sports being the next big thing in China because of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.”
The Ski & Snow Park 90,000 square meters venue will host several activities with varied infrastructures, including ski slopes, and Olympic-grade slope, ski runs and 25 other ski-related attractions, as well as cutting-edge spa with a water-park and performance-ready setup.
